  • Reports

One part of this project will be a compilation of the data of the land snails from the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo, and neighbouring areas available in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) and Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) in Tervuren (investigating and documenting the stored voucher specimens). This will supplement the data about the land snail fauna of that national park gathered by Mr. Umuntunundi during a recent survey.

Furthermore, Mr. Umuntunundi would like to:

  1. learn how to dissect slugs and semi-slugs and how to determine them by characters of the reproductive organs;
  2. determine shells of semi-slugs collected in Afromontane forests of the Albertine Rift and sort into morpho-species by comparison with reference material from RBINS and RMCA in Tervuren;
  3. develop an identification key for the semi-slugs based on shell characters (because often only shells are available);
  4. learn how to perform DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
