Due to the high morphological similarity, different taxa have been named as G. lucidum around the world. Later on, collections earlier named as G. lucidum except African ones were re-considered to represent numerous distinct species. Some of these species have shown to possess important medicinal properties, while others have been found to have unwanted effects on internal organs. To avoid any mushroom poisoning for which misidentification of species is one of the main causes, this project aims at identifying with accuracy species forming G. lucidum group in Africa. Therefore, in addition to own collections of G. lucidum group and collections available at the botanical garden Meise, we will use an integrative and multi-phasic taxonomic approaches to discriminate species within this group. At the end, this project will contribute to the taxonomy of G. lucidum group in Africa and generate recommendations about species that can be used safely by African populations.
